About the Average Calculator
The Average Calculator computes every common measure of a data set at once: the mean, median, mode and range, plus the sum, count, minimum, maximum and standard deviation. Paste numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines and press Calculate Averages to see the results — perfect for grades, test scores, expenses, survey data and statistics homework.
Mean, median and mode explained
- Mean — the arithmetic average: add all values and divide by how many there are.
- Median — the middle value when the numbers are sorted (the average of the two middle values if the count is even).
- Mode — the value (or values) that appears most often. A set can have one mode, several, or none.
- Range — the difference between the largest and smallest value.
For the set 12, 7, 9, 15, 7, 10 the mean is 10, the median is 9.5, the mode is 7 and the range is 8.
When to use the mean vs the median
The mean is best for symmetric data without extreme values. The median is more representative when the data is skewed or contains outliers — for example, average house prices or salaries, where a few very high values would pull the mean upward. Reporting both gives a fuller picture.
Standard deviation
Standard deviation measures how spread out the numbers are around the mean. A small σ means values cluster near the average; a large σ means they are widely dispersed. This calculator reports the population standard deviation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the mean? Add all the numbers together and divide by how many numbers there are.
What if there is no repeating value? Then the data set has no mode, and the calculator reports "none".
What separators can I use? Commas, spaces and new lines all work, so you can paste a column from a spreadsheet directly.
