About the Grade Calculator

The Grade Calculator handles two of the most common student questions: "what is my current grade?" and "what do I need on the final?". Both calculations run entirely in your browser — your data is never sent anywhere.

How weighted-average grades work

If your course mixes homework, quizzes, midterms and a final, each component has a weight that says how much it counts toward the overall grade. The weighted average is:

Average = Σ (score × weight) / Σ (weights)

For example, scoring 90% on homework (weight 20) and 70% on the midterm (weight 30) gives (90·20 + 70·30) / (20+30) = (1800+2100)/50 = 78%. The calculator does this for any number of rows and normalises the weights for you, so you don't need to make them sum to exactly 100.

How the "final needed" calculation works

If you know your current course average C, the percentage of the course already graded wnow, the weight of the final wfin, and your target overall grade T, then the required final score is:

Required = (T·(wnow + wfin) − C·wnow) / wfin

If the result is above 100%, the target is unreachable — the calculator will tell you so plainly.

Grading scales used

  • US letter grade: A (≥ 90%), B (80–89%), C (70–79%), D (60–69%), F (< 60%).
  • UK degree class: First (≥ 70%), 2:1 (60–69%), 2:2 (50–59%), Third (40–49%), Fail (< 40%).

Common uses

  • End-of-semester planning — what do I need on the final?
  • Tracking GCSE / A-level / IB coursework progress through the year
  • University module averages with mixed assessment weightings
  • Quickly checking if a missed assignment changes your overall grade

Frequently Asked Questions

Do my weights have to add up to 100? No. The calculator normalises whatever weights you enter, so you can use raw points, percentages or any other proportional scale.

What does the "Difficulty" rating mean? It compares the required final score to your current average and labels the gap (Easy, Moderate, Tough or Impossible) so you know how aggressive your target is.

Can I drop a low score? The calculator does not auto-drop scores. If your course allows the lowest grade to be dropped, simply leave that row out and the rest will average correctly.

Why does the result differ slightly from my school portal? Some institutions round differently (some round each component first, others round only the final result). For an exact match, follow your syllabus's rounding rules.
