About the Square Footage Calculator
The Square Footage Calculator works out the area of any room, floor or plot of land and converts the result into the unit you need. It supports four common shapes — rectangle, triangle, circle and trapezoid — and accepts measurements in metres, feet or feet + inches.
Formulas used
- Rectangle: Area = length × width
- Triangle: Area = ½ × base × perpendicular height
- Circle: Area = π × radius²
- Trapezoid: Area = ½ × (side a + side b) × perpendicular height
Unit conversions
The calculator displays the result in six common units. The exact conversions are:
- 1 m² = 10.7639 ft² = 1.19599 yd² = 1,550 in²
- 1 acre = 4,046.86 m² = 43,560 ft² = 0.4047 hectares
- 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.4711 acres
How to measure a room or floor
- Use a tape measure or laser to find the length and width.
- Take measurements at floor level, ignoring skirting boards but including alcoves.
- For irregular shapes, split the room into rectangles and add their areas.
- Convert any feet-and-inches readings using the calculator's "Feet + Inches" mode.
Common uses
- Estimating flooring (carpet, tiles, laminate, vinyl) — buy 5–10% extra for cuts and waste
- Buying paint — most brands list coverage per litre or gallon (m² or ft²) on the tin
- Property listings — UK floorplans often quote total internal area in ft² and m²
- Garden and land sizing — convert to acres or hectares for plot deeds
- Heating/cooling sizing for HVAC, radiators or air conditioning
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate square footage? For a rectangle, multiply length by width. For other shapes, use the formulas above. The calculator handles all four automatically.
What is 1,000 ft² in square metres? 1,000 ft² ≈ 92.9 m². Type 1,000 into a Rectangle in feet (with 1 as the other side) and the m² result is shown immediately.
Why does my measurement seem too big? Double-check the units — feet and metres are easy to confuse. A "5 by 4" room is 20 m² (≈ 215 ft²) in metres but only 20 ft² (≈ 1.86 m²) in feet.
Does the calculator handle L-shapes? Not directly. Split the L into two rectangles, calculate each, and add the results.
Is my data stored? No — every calculation runs locally in your browser.
