How conversion works
Each unit is defined relative to a base unit for its category (for example, metres for length or grams for mass). To convert, the value is changed into the base unit and then into the target unit. Temperature is handled separately because Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin have different zero points, not just different scales.
