About the Council Tax Calculator
UK council tax is set by your local authority in pounds per band-D property. All other bands are a fixed multiple of band D, so once you know the band-D rate you can compute every other band exactly.
Band ratios (relative to band D = 1.0)
- A: 6/9 = 0.667 B: 7/9 = 0.778 C: 8/9 = 0.889 D: 9/9 = 1.000
- E: 11/9 = 1.222 F: 13/9 = 1.444 G: 15/9 = 1.667 H: 18/9 = 2.000
- I (Wales only): 21/9 = 2.333
How to find your council's band-D rate
Search "[council name] council tax band D 2025–26" or look at the back of your annual bill. Rates are set every March for the year starting in April.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are bills paid over 10 months? Most councils default to a 10-month schedule (April–January) so the monthly figure on your bill will be about 20% higher than the calendar-monthly figure. You can usually request 12 months instead.
Does this include parish precepts? No — the band-D rate you enter should already include county, district, police and fire precepts plus any parish precept. The total is what the council bills you.
