About the Dog Age Calculator
The classic "dog years × 7" rule is a myth — dogs mature rapidly in their first two years and then age more slowly. Modern veterinary science uses two more accurate approaches:
- AVMA / Wang et al. (2020) — based on DNA methylation; Human age = 16·ln(dog age) + 31.
- AAHA size-adjusted scale — accounts for the well-known fact that large and giant breeds age faster than small breeds.
Why size matters
A 10-year-old Chihuahua is roughly equivalent to a 56-year-old human; a 10-year-old Great Dane is closer to 79. The calculator uses AAHA size classification (small / medium / large / giant) to refine the AVMA estimate.
Life stages
- Puppy: 0–1 yr — rapid growth and socialisation
- Junior / Young adult: 1–3 yr — peak fitness
- Adult: 3–7 yr (small/med) or 3–5 yr (large/giant)
- Senior: 7+ yr (small/med) or 5+ yr (large/giant) — annual blood panels recommended
- Geriatric: last 25% of expected lifespan
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do dogs live? Roughly: small 13–15 yr, medium 11–13, large 9–11, giant 7–10. Mixed breeds tend to live slightly longer than pedigree dogs of the same size.
Why does my Yorkie seem so much younger than the calculator says? Small dogs both age more slowly and live longer. The size-adjusted figure is more representative.
Does spaying/neutering affect lifespan? Studies suggest yes, modestly — but the effect is small compared with body weight, exercise and dental care.
