🏢 Employer Cost Calculator (Arbeitgeberbrutto)

Work out the true cost of an employee in Germany for 2026 — the gross salary plus the employer's social-security shares and the U1, U2 and insolvency (U3) Umlagen. Updated 2026 rates.

Umlagen options — U1 (small firms), U2 & insolvency levy
⚠️ Guidance only. The employer social-security shares (pension, unemployment, health, care) follow the official 2026 rates and ceilings and are exact. The Umlagen U1 and U2 are set individually by each health insurer (Krankenkasse), so the defaults shown are typical estimates you can edit; U1 applies only to firms with 30 or fewer employees. The insolvency levy U3 is 0.15% nationwide. This tool ignores voluntary benefits, the accident-insurance (Berufsgenossenschaft) contribution and any company pension. For payroll-exact figures consult your Steuerberater or payroll provider.

How employer cost (Arbeitgeberbrutto) works in 2026

In Germany the salary you agree with an employee — the gross or Brutto — is only part of what the role costs. On top of it the employer pays its own half of the four statutory social-security branches, plus a set of employer-only levies called the Umlagen. The sum of the gross and these add-ons is the real cost of employment, often called the Arbeitgeberbrutto, and the add-on as a share of gross is the Lohnnebenkostenquote.

Employer social-security shares (2026)

Pension (Rentenversicherung) 9.3% · Unemployment (Arbeitslosenversicherung) 1.3% · Health (Krankenversicherung) 7.3% + half the Zusatzbeitrag (2026 average 2.9%) · Long-term care (Pflegeversicherung) 1.8% — but only 1.3% in Saxony, where employees carry the larger share. Unlike the employee, the employer never pays the 0.6% childless surcharge. Contributions are capped at the 2026 ceilings: €8,450/month for pension & unemployment, €5,812.50/month for health & care.

The Umlagen (employer-only)

U1 reimburses continued pay when an employee is off sick and is charged only to firms with 30 or fewer employees. U2 reimburses maternity-protection costs and is charged to every employer. Both rates are set by the employee's Krankenkasse, so they vary — adjust them in the options above. U3, the Insolvenzgeldumlage, is a flat 0.15% in 2026.
